The El Centro Police Department is reporting an increase in a particular type of identity theft in the area. According to Sgt. Jeff Mason of the El Centro Police Department a suspect will have what looks like a credit or debit card. Mason said that there is generally a magnetic strip on the back of the card, the card account numbers may be lightly embossed, applied with a label maker or even hand written. The cardholders name is apparently the name of the person holding the card but the account number will actually belong to an identity theft victim who is unaware of the cards use. Suspects attempt to distract the store employee by engaging in conversation during the transaction. The forged card will not be read by the stores magnetic scanner and the suspect will then ask that they enter the number manually. Since it is a valid number, it will be accepted and the transactionj is completed. Mason said that local police are asking retail sales assciates to be careful when completing credit or debit card transactions and asking the public in general to take steps to protect their identity. Mason suggested that people should ensure that your mail is safe, shred documents that have personal information and keep track of your credit card numbers as well as closely examine all credit card statements.
