(The Valley goes dark to avoid a major problem)….Kevin Kelley, Imperial Irrigation District spokesperson, explained the situation that left the entire Valley and parts of Coachella Valley in the dark Sunday

. He said the localized windstorm created a problem with the 161 kv loop near Ocotillo. To avert an anticipated major problem, the District shut down the entire system. The loop is a major transmission line that carries power out of the County. The biggest inconvenience was bringing the system back up. Kelley said each sub-station had to be turned on separately, every 15 minutes. All power had been restored by 10:00 Sunday night. A fire reported in a generator at the Dogwood station was completely un-related to the outage. Kelley said that fire occurred after the system shut down had begun. El Centro Regional Medical Center offered a “cool site” for those who needed shelter from the heat. The same storm that created the problem also provided cooler temperatures while the power was out. Cable television and the local radio stations were all affected by the outage. None, however, reported any problems re-booting their transmitters once the power was restored.
