(Imperial Irrigation District Board agrees to enter into Mesquite Lake talks with County)….The County wants to develop the Mesquite Lake area for an Industrial Park.

They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Imperial, and Brawley has offered to sign one, as well. Last week County Planning and Development Director Jurg Hueberger went before the IID Board to ask that they participate in the development of infrastructure for the industrial park. Hueberger asked that the District contribute $7.5 million over a ten-year period. The funds, according to the request could come from the Local Entity monies paid by the San Diego County Water Authority as a result of water transfer agreements. This week Hueberger had the support of the El Centro Chamber of Commerce, the City of Imperial, County Board of Supervisors, Imperial Valley College and others. The four members of the IID Board present at Tuesday’s meeting agreed the project was worth participating in. Director Stella Mendoza said it was a good project for all concerned. The Board voted 4-0 to authorize the General Manager and appropriate staff to meet with County officials to jointly develop an infrastructure and economic stimulus business plan for the Mesquite Lake Industrial Park specific plan area and explore the possibility of the IID providing the $7.5 million over a ten year period towards the infrastructure improvements at the project site. Mendoza said she understood the motion to mean if all benchmarks set by the District were met, the funding would be made available. Director Mike Abatti did not attend this weeks meeting.
