(The Imperial Irrigation District doubles the Emergency Energy Assistance)….The 2008 budget for the Emergency Energy Assistance Program was $450,000. Those monies will be gone by October 1. Tuesday the District Board agreed to add another $450,000 to the Program budget. The funds will come from the Public Benefits Charge balance. Staff told the Board participants in the program have increased to 19,000. The Program helps income-qualified customers in financial crisis avoid disconnection for non-payment of their energy bills. Qualified applicants at risk for disconnection are eligible for a summer benefit of $200. The non-summer benefit is $150. They said the benefit is not to pay the power bill, but to keep the power from being disconnected. They said next budget year, they will request $1.1 million for the EEAP Program. The United Way and Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo take the applications and distribute the Program funds. |
