(Imperial Irrigation District agrees with safety concerns)….Last week John Hunter from San Diego made an emotional presentation to the IID on the dangers of the newly lined All American Canal.

This week, the IID board unanimously agreed to send a letter encouraging the safety measures recommended be given serious consideration. The District Board agreed the measures should be paid for by those who will be benefiting from the 23 miles of concrete lining. Letters were sent to San Diego County Water Authority, the State Department of Water Resources and the Federal Bureau of Reclamation. The San Diego Authority and D W R are paying for the Lining project. The Canal is actually owned by the Federal Government. San Diego will receive the seepage water recovered from the concrete lining of the Canal. Hunter recommends safety buoy line be strung across the canal at various intervals. In between the buoys, Hunter says there should be ladders and steps constructed up the concrete canal walls. He says there should also be a deterrent fence constructed on both sides of the Canal. Hunter has said the IID Board action is a good first step.
