(The County says they have not yet received any requests for a special ballot item)…It was recently reported in a local newspaper that Ray Naud of the Sunrise Optimist Club had sent a letter to the County Board of Supervisors asking for a special election on the Counties Ordinance to ban the personal use of fireworks.
Thursday County Counsel Ralph Cordova said he had not seen such a letter. Cordova said any legislation could be challenged by referendum, but he could not comment on this issue because he had not seen or heard of the reported letter. A letter has been sent to the Counties Elections Department, asking technical questions as to how what is needed to place an issue on the ballot. At the protest of several service groups and community organizations, including the Sunrise Optimist Club, the County Board adopted an ordinance last September that would ban the sale of Fireworks in the County for personal use. The service groups and organizations said they would lose several thousand dollars in fundraising funds if they were not allowed to sell fireworks for the 4th of July. The City of Holtville is in the process of adopting an ordinance to ban personal fireworks. If the 2nd reading of their ordinance is approved it will mean the sale of personal fireworks would be illegal thru out the County. |
