The U.S. Border Patrol has released statistics for the 2007 - 2008 fiscal year and the El Centro Sector of the Border Patrol saw a 27% decrease in illegal alien apprehensions over the previous year. Nationwide there was a 17% decrease in apprehensions but the El Centro Sector numbers were down even moe. 40,961 apprehensions in the just completed fiscal year while 55,883 apprehensions were made in 2006 - 2007. Along with a decrease in alien apprehensions , the El Centro sector Border Patrol recorded a decrease in the number of narcotics smuggled through the Valley. Marijuana seizures were at 33,602 this year while over 61,000 pounds were seized in the prior year. That's a 45% drop. Cocaine apprehensions dropped 84%. The El Centro Sector, working with the United States Attorney's Office , increased prosecution of alien smugglers and criminal aliens including the arrest , prosecution and conviction of Emilio Reyes-Bosque. Reyes-Bosque received 171/2 years for smuggling. Prosecution of aggravated felons jumped from 88 in 2007 to 135 in 2008. Those prosecutions resulted in a 90% conviction rate according to the Border Patrol. The El Centro Sector includes nearly 1,100 agents.
