An AT & T spokesman told KXO News that human error was the cause of the countywide  phone outage today.

Human error by a third-party vendor at the AT & T facility in El Centro shut down land line and cell phone service throughout Imperial County early this morning. The outage  began at 5:20 AM this morning and it took untill nearly noon to restore phone service to most of the Valley. Some scattered areas were  without full service as of late Wednesday afternoon. AT & T said that additional equiptment was being brought in to get everything back to normal. With the loss of phone service the countywide emergency 9 1 1 phone system was inoperable. Residents were encouraged to go to the nearest fire station, police department or hospital to report emergencies. County and city emergency agencies beefed up staff to handle any problems caused by the phone loss.
