High winds caused blowing sand and dust Sunday limiting visibility that resulted in closing a major roadway.

Winds blowing at 25 to 30 miles per hour and gusting up to 45 miles per hour caused a sand storm that shut down State Highway 98 between Drew Road and Imperial Highway in Ocotillo. According to the California Highway Patrol there was zero visibility on that stretch of highway with reduced visibility on many other roads in the Valley. A travelers advisory was issued for all vehicles on Interstate 8 from the state line at Winterhaven to San Diego. because of high winds. The National Weather Service forecast calls for the winds to diminish somewhat this evening.
