(Haystack burns itself out Sunday)….The Haystack began burning Friday South of the Imperial Valley Mall.

The fire never threatened the Mall, but it was close to the new Imperial Irrigation District substation. County fire said they did not want to put water on the fire, because adding water results in days of smoldering. They said their water tender was not operating properly.. They had wanted to use the tender to try to keep the one haystack fire from spreading to a near-by haystack. The substation was no damaged by the fire or the heat from the fire. There are reports the fires may have started under suspicious circumstances, but there is no confirmation to those reports.
