(Two meetings on the Greenpath West project are packed Thursday)...The state Public Utilities Commission and the state Parks Commission both held public hearings in Borrego Springs Thursday. The hearings were to help determine the route for the proposed $1.3 billion transmission line San Diego Gas and Electric wants to construct. The line would run 150 miles, from a Solar Panel field in Imperial County on into San Diego. The Parks Commission met to determine if the route had to go thru the Anza-Borrego State Park. The P.U.C. is trying to determine the entire route. Over 400 people attended both meetings, most of whom opposed the transmission line. Not all of those opposed were from the affected area. Many were from around the State and from out of state. They said if the transmission line were permitted to go thru the Anza-Borrego Park, other parks could be threatened in the future. SDG & E said the line was critical to ensure electrical reliability in the future. The Greenpath project is planned to spread renewable resources thru-out the southern part of the state, from Imperial County. The project is the result of a partnership between the IID, SDG & E, Los Angeles Water and Power, Citizens Group out of Boston and others. The project has yet to receive full approval as agreements are still being negotiated.
