(Two suffer fatal injuries within hours of each other Saturday)….Both tragic incidents occurred in the Sand Dunes.

The California Highway Patrol says the first incident occurred at around 12:43 Saturday afternoon. The C H P says 26-year-old Stephanie Ann Katin was a passenger in a Yamaha Rhino being driven by her husband, 29 year old Paul Katin. Both are from Yucaipa. The husband was reportedly driving the vehicle on top of a 30-foot dune. The Highway Patrol says he attempted to turn the Rhino to the left and proceed down the hill. The vehicle lost traction and slid sideways. The C H P says the Rhino overturned. Deputy Coroner Henry Proo says the woman was partially ejected and suffered fatal head injuries. The victim was restrained at the time. About an hour and a half later, in the Glamis Dunes, a 14 year old suffered fatal injuries in a similar incident. The Highway Patrol says this Rhino was being driven by a 16 year old from Santa Ana. As they drove up a dune at around 30 miles per hour, the 16 year olds foot became stuck on the gas pedal. The Rhino went over the sand hill, landed on it’s front bumper and over turned, ejecting the 14 year old, who was not wearing his seatbelt. Richer Erl Massey suffered fatal head injuries. He succumbed at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley. The unidentified driver of the Rhino suffered a minor leg injury. The Highway Patrol says the driver was wearing his lap belt. The C H P this incident is still under investigation.
