A storage container full of fireworks blew up Sunday afternoon.
The fireworks were being stored north of Holtville in a facility protected by berms and bunkers. At about 2:30 Sunday afternoon a fire broke out and the fireworks went off with a bang. The storage unit was destroyed but the bunkers and berms contained the blast as designed. No one was injured in the explosion. A fire was started by the explosion and raced down the river bottom next to the facility, threatening several structures as well as agricultural fields, a dairy farm, feedlot and some vehicles.Imperial County Fire Department responded quickly and called in a second alarm immediatly. Mutual aid responded from El Centro, Holtville, Brawley, Calipatria, Calexico and NAF El Centro. The fire was quickly contained and then brought under control. No injuries were reported in fighting the blaze. Cause of the fire and extent of damage has not been determined yet. |
