(Congressman jumps into Holtville controversy)…..The controversy surrounds the City of Holtville’s attempt to clear out the Browning and Mecca Mobile Home Parks.

A few years ago, the City Council approved a re-zoning of the 5th Street site from residential to commercial. Last year the City said they wanted to enforce the re-zone, but the residents were not ready to leave. Congressman Bob Filner now says the City may have violated the Fair Housing Act in their efforts to evict the Mobile Home residents. Filner says the California Rural Legal Assistance has raised numerous concerns about the rezoning and the notification of the residents. The Congressman said the Condemnation notices delivered by the County were in English and not in Spanish, the native language of most of the residents. Filner is holding a town hall meeting Friday at the Browning Mobile Home Park to meet with the residents. He is scheduled to be at the Park at 4:30 in the afternoon.
