(Eight inmates were injured in separate melees this week)….Both incidents occurred at the Calipatria State Prison.

The first incident happened Monday and involved Hispanic inmates. Two prisoners were injured. On Tuesday over 40 black and white inmates attacked each other. Officials at the Prison say the second incident was racial; it is not clear what set it off. Six inmates were injured Tuesday. None of the injuries either day were life threatening. Officials say the injuries were stab wounds and head injuries. They were all treated at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley and have since been returned to the Prison. Officials say none of the Prison staff was injured. Guards used non-lethal means to break up the melees, such as pepper spray. A warning shot was fired Monday. The facility is not on a complete lock-down as officials review the two incidents. They say the prisoners involved were placed in administrative segregation. The modified lock-down allows a couple yards to remain open for the less violent inmates.
