Washington, DC - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising people to avoid jalapeno and serrano peppers grown in Mexico.
The FDA says that peppers grown in the United States are not connected to the current outbreak of Salmonella.Recent evidence gathered by the FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health authorities in several states have combined to indicate the contaminated jalapeno pepper came from a grower in Mexico. Additional trace-back and trace-forward information obtained this week led to the FDA determination that the Agricola Zarigosa produce distribution center in McAllen, Texas was not the original source of the contaminated pepper. Authorities are still attempting to identify the farm in Mexico where the produce was grown and packed. Tomatoes were originally thought to be the source of the salmonella outbreak and on June 7 the FDA had told consumers to avoid certain raw tomatoes. That ban was lifted last week. Commercially canned , pickled and cooked jalapenos from many location are safe to eat |
