El Centro - SWAT Team Called Out For Barricaded Man PDF Print E-mail

The El Centro Police Department called out the SWAT Team early Sunday morning.

El Centro Police received a call at 2:29 Sunday morning reporting shots were fired near 6th and Wensley Avenue. Officers responded to 665 Wensley and heard additional shots fired. They also observed a man running into an apartment at the rear of the residence. Police sealed off the area and requested the SWAT Team be activated along with a negotiating team for a suspect apparently barricaded in the second story apartment of a two story duplex at the rear of the Wensley address.. Ar various times officers observed a man in a window brandishing a hatchet as well as a rifle. He was also seen tearing up the apartment including ripping a hole completly through a back wall. Police were able to esiablish contact with the man by using a P.A. system and persueded him to surrender. He exited the apartment through the hole he had made in the back wall and fell to the yard outside where he was taken into custody. The suspect, 57 year old James Romero , was booked into Imperial County Jail where he's being held with bail set at $250,000. He's charged with two counts of firing at an inhabited dwelling , a shot was fired through the floor into the lower level apartment and a neighboring house was struck by another bullet. More charges are pending.  At least 10 rounds were fired and two rifles were confiscated. The El Centro Police Department was assisted by the Imperial Police Department and the Imperial County Sheriffs Office.
