El Centro - Southwest High School Student Found With a Gun on Campus

The El Centro Police Department says that at about 10:00 this morning two students on the El Centro campus called their parents and told them that they had heard that another student had a gun on campus. The students told their parents that they were scared and wanted to go home. The parents went to the school and informed administrators of the calls. The two students assisted administrators to identify the student with the gun. The students classroom was located and Principal Danette Morrell went to the classroom where the student was found asleep. She took the students backpack and then escorted him to the office and El Centro Police were notified. In the office the student was detained and searched by Imperial County Probation Officers assigned to the campus. Eight rounds of :22 caliber ammunition were found in the boys pockets and an unloaded :22 caliber handgun was found in the backpack. Officers Alvaro Ramirez and Andrew NcFadden of the El Centro Police Department arrested the 17 year old male student and he was taken to the police department for questioning. He was later booked at Imperial County Juvenile Detention Facility on charges of Minor in Possession of a Firearm. Minor in Possession of Live Ammunition and Posession of a Firearm on campus. Sgt. Jeff Mason told KXO News ." It's too early in the investigation to comment about the potential motive of the student."
