(El Centro Chamber backs the Imperial Irrigation District)…The Chamber’s Board of Directors recently heard presentations from San Diego Gas and Electric and the Imperial Irrigation District, and others.

The presentations dealt with the Sunrise Power Link Project and the route it should take. S D G & E favors what they call a Northern Route, while the IID favors a Southern Route. The Routes would be used to transmit renewable energy out of Imperial County. The El Centro Chamber Board agreed overwhelmingly to back the project, itself. On a majority vote, they agreed to support the IID’s preferred Southern Route. The Southern Route is preferred because of possible system bypass and because it could result in stranded assets and higher energy bills to ratepayers. The issue was brought before the Board by the Chamber’s Government affairs, Economic Development and Executive Committees. The policy statement adopted by the Chamber Board will be sent off to Public Utilities Commission for inclusion in its final Environmental Impact Report. A decision by the PUC on the Project is expected in August.
