(Draft EIR good news for Imperial Irrigation District)….The Draft Environmental Document is on the proposed Sunrise Powerlink. The Billion-dollar project is being proposed by San Diego Gas and Electric to transport renewable energy from Imperial County to their service area and beyond. The project was part of a joint Green Path South project, but the IID broke away from the project after the two utilities could not agree on a preferred route. S D G & E has said they wanted a Northern Route, while the IID has stood by a Southern Route. The Draft Environmental Impact Report issued this week sides with the Imperial Irrigation District. The Document says the Southern Route is a more environmentally friendly route. IID general manager Brian Brady says that is good news for the District. The San Diego Utility has not commented. The State Public Utilities Commission is expected to announce their preference for the project, possibly this week. County Supervisor Larry Grogan said Tuesday he doubted a route would be important. He said it is expected the PUC will side with the original preference, which is to recommend San Diego build their own fossil fuel plant and not the Powerlink. |
