County wants suspected human smuggler tried as adult

(The County wants 15 year old tried as an adult)….The District Attorney’s Office will ask a Superior Court Judge to allow them to charge the boy as an adult. The 15 year old is the alleged driver of the Suburban July 18 that crashed into a canal near Westmorland, killing six passengers, including the family of a 12-year-old girl. The vehicle was reportedly carrying over 20 suspected illegal immigrants at the time of the tragedy. The D.A.’s office asked that the suspect’s identity not be revealed at this time. The said the name will become a matter of public record during the court hearing September 9. The suspect had been charged with Federal offenses, but those charges were dropped to allow for the County petition. Officials say the state law has more teeth in it if the suspect is tried as an adult.
