(Stolen vehicle recovered)…Brawley Police say a vigilant girlfriend set off a chain of events to catch a car thief.

Sergeant Perry Monita said the woman called her boyfriend at just before 7:00 Monday morning. She told him she saw his car driving south on Highway 111, and she wanted to know who was driving it. The man, who lives in the 200 block of ‘E’ Street, ran to his window, saw his car was indeed gone. He called the Brawley Police department, who called the California Highway Patrol. The C H P spotted the stolen vehicle near the intersection of Highway 111 and Evan Hewes Highway. They stopped the vehicle at around 7:26 am. The Highway Patrol arrested the man found driving the stolen vehicle. He was identified as 18-year-old David Mendoza. Monita said the suspect has residences listed in El Centro and Calipatria. He was booked into County Jail, charged with Auto Theft.
