(Vehicle thefts on the increase in the Border City)….Calexico Police Chief Jim Neujahr says auto theft is up 10 percent in Calexico.

The Chief told the Imperial Valley Press that many vehicle owners might be very aware of the car thefts. In the Friday edition of the newspaper, the Chief many may be faking the vehicle thefts to file false insurance claims. The newspaper reports Calexico lists 294 vehicle thefts in the first six months of this year. They say that is up ten percent, compared to the same time a year ago. The Chief blames the economy for the possible fraud, saying some may be forced to choose between paying their mortgage and their vehicle payments.
