(Campo residents reject increased fire protection)…Mail in Ballots were counted this week in a special vote for property owners in the Campo area.

The question facing the voters was a $100 property assessment to raise $100,000 for the community’s volunteer fire department. The assessment would have been the same for all property owners, no matter what was on the property. The measure was rejected, but by a very slim margin. Of the 313 votes cast, 200 were for the measure and 113 were against. It missed the two-thirds majority needed to be approved by seven votes. This is the fourth time property owner have rejected the measure that would increase fire protection. According to the measure, the assessment would end if San Diego County established a regional fire department. County officials are reportedly discussing the consolidation of fire protection in that area, but no funding has been established.
