| California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta Sets Theme For 2009 |

The 2009 California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta will begin its second century of entertaining the Valley next March with a theme of "One Great Country, One Great Fair." The theme was selected by the 45th Agricultural District Board of Directors during its annual reorganizational meeting where they also selected Darrel Bostic as board president and Cherisse R. Alford as vice president. Lee Hindman was reappointed as treasurer and the board also officially welcomed three new directors. The 2009 fair, will be February 27 to March 8, 2009. It celebrated its Centennial in 2008. Each member of the Board of Directors is appointed by the governor of the State of California for a term of four years. Members are charged with the authority and responsibility to develop policies, procedures and regulations for the operation of the 45th District Agricultural Association, the organization that administers the Imperial Valley Expo and the California Mid-Winter Fair. Bostic, who was board vice president last year, is vice president of Black Dog Farms, where he oversees 8,000 acres of vegetable and forage crops. He was appointed to the fair board in 2006. Alford is Vice President Corporate Relations at Alford Distributing, a family owned beverage distributor which has been in business in the Imperial County for 56 years. She was reappointed to the board in 2006 and previously served from 1998 to 2001. Alford currently serves on the Junior Fair board committee. The newly appointed board members include Richard Fragale, Jason Jackson and James Hamilton. They were appointed to the board in May by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, replacing Frances Beope, Rosalinda Cardenas and Rosalia Ulloa. Fragale, of El Centro, most recently served as interim vice-president of Business Services for Imperial Valley College from 2006 to 2007. He also served as superintendent for the Central Union High School District for four years as well as 13 years as superintendent of the Brawley Union High School district. Fragale is president of Imperial Valley United Way and a member of the board of directors of the Cancer Research Center of Imperial Valley. He also serves as chair of the supervisory committee for the Sun Community Federal Credit Union and is a member of the Brawley Elks Club. Jackson, of El Centro, is general manager for Desert Security Services. He is a member of the El Centro Kiwanis Club and president of the Japanese American Citizens League. He also is a member of the El Centro Moose Lodge, El Centro Police Advisory Board, El Centro Planning Commission, Downtown El Centro Association, Imperial County Workforce Development Board and El Centro Chamber of Commerce Board. Hamilton, of Brawley, served as the credit manager for Jordan Central Implement Company from 1997 until his retirement in 2007. Other positions he has held include area credit manager for PureGro, formerly Western Farm Service; accountant and office manager for Quarles Oil Company; branch manager for Avco Financial Services and office and credit manager for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He is a member of the Brawley Masonic Lodge and association treasurer for the Korean War Veterans Association. He also currently serves as treasurer for the city of Brawley and is on the Centinela State Prison Advisory Committee. Additionally, the Governor appointed three current board members to new four-year terms: Richard Acosta, Joe Montenegro and "Bo" Shropshire. All three are past board presidents. Acosta, an El Centro resident, has served on the board of directors since 2001. He is an insurance agent with Smith Kandal Insurance. He is past president and past director of the El Centro Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau and a member of Rotary Club of Holtville. He is also a member of the board of trustees for the Central Union High School District and a committee member of the Blue Angels and Military Appreciation Golf Tournament. Montenegro of El Centro, has been on the board of directors since 2003. He has been district manager for Southern California Gas Company since 1990. He is a member of Energy for Others, an employee based charitable organization, and a member of the El Centro Kiwanis Club. Shropshire, of Brawley, has served on the board of directors since 2004. He has worked for the Helena Chemical Company since 1978 as a salesman and branch manager and currently holds the position of soil agronomist. He is a member of the Brawley Masonic Lodge and the Brawley Elks Lodge. Shropshire is also an Imperial County 4-H community resource person. Board members who terms are continuing include Bostic, Alford and Brenda S. Scaroni, of Heber. Scaroni and her husband Steve are owners of Valley Harvesting and Packing, Inc., a custom harvesting company that harvests throughout California, Arizona and Central Mexico Hindman, of El Centro, is a Certified Public Accountant and has been treasurer of the fair board for nine years. He is general manager of local outlet of Palo Verde Valley Disposal Services. |
