Calexico Tax increase may not make to November ballot PDF Print E-mail

(Half cent tax increase probably won’t be on Calexico Ballot this year)…The issue, however, is not dead.

The Calexico City Council held a special meeting Wednesday evening to discuss the proposed tax increase. As presented to the Council, the half cent sales tax increase for parks and recreation. It was hoped the measure could be placed before voters at a special Municipal Election November 4. It does not look like that will be possible. The Council had several concerns with the proposal, and they put off any decision until those concerns were addressed. That could mean a decision on the measure would not come in time to qualify for the November Election. A major concern of the Council was how they could use the Sales Tax increase. Specifically, the Council wants a legal opinion as to if they could use the tax on the police and fire departments. Both departments are strapped for funds, and the City feels a tax increase would be the only way to obtain the monies needed for both police and fire department improvements. Past ballot measures have failed.
