(Seven arrests made at DUI checkpoints)…Sergeant Carlos Padilla says two checkpoints were set up in Calexico over the holiday weekend.

Padilla says the DUI Checkpoint Saturday was set up at Paulin, just North of Second Street. He says five people were arrested during that operation. On Sunday, the Avoid the Ten Coalition set up a checkpoint on Highway 111, North of Third Street. Two arrests were made there. The Sergeant said the Checkpoints are designed as deterrents, and as such, he feels both operations were very successful. Funding for the “Avoid” program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Traffic Safety Administration. Padilla says his department will be out in force the weekend prior to and during the Mexican Independence Holiday period September 15 and 16. The full schedule of Avoid the Ten Coalition operations will be released in December.
