(Calexico School District may have a problem finding bus drivers)….At the School Board meeting in Calexico Wednesday the Directors voted to lay-off 6 of the 9 School Bus Drivers in the District. The vote was 4-0. Director Salvador Pacheco did not attend the meeting. The School Board’s plan was to assign the District’s mechanics double duty. The Mechanics are eligible to drive school buses, and they can be assigned the duty of driving school bus routes. There is a catch. Classified Employee Union representative Vincent Ayala reminded the Board that, according to the current contract, the mechanics can fill in if there is a shortage of bus drivers, unless the shortage is created by the District. Ayala told the Board his union would be filing an unfair Labor Practice with the Perb Board, if the District proceeded with their plan to press the mechanics into bus driving duty. The District Board decided to table the plan, but they did not rescind the decision to lay-off the six drivers. |
