(Calexico crews beat the rush-hour)…A traffic nightmare was anticipated Tuesday as crews in Calexico worked to repair a collapsed sewer line.

The beginning of the sinkhole was discovered at around 11:00 Monday night on Imperial Avenue, at Third Street. Utility Services workers closed off Imperial Avenue and began repairs by mid-night Monday. Calexico officials predicted the main artery to the Mexican Border would be closed until at least 10:00 Tuesday night. The crews surprised themselves. Work was done and Imperial Avenue reopened well before the rush hour started. They had the repairs done by 3:00 in the afternoon. Utility Services Director Luis Estrada says an old sewer line caused the collapse. He said it was the same problem that plagued the City a few years ago on Highway 98. The latest collapse cost the City between $45,000 and $50,000 to repair. Estrada says under the Cities Capital Improvement Program, his crews will be replacing the old sewer lines, one at a time.
