(Calexico approves a balanced budget)….The City Council said all that was needed was a little belt tightening.

Mayor John Renison said the $16.8 million balanced document was approved contingent on a couple sacrifices. He said there would be no merit pay increases for City employees for six months, and employees will be asked to relinquish some of their free Social Security. Renison said Calexico is the only city in the Valley that pays 100% Social Security for its employees. The Mayor said those actions, coupled with a $400,000 carryover expected in July and the $1.2 million the City has in contingencies helped trim the $3 million deficit the City faced. Renison said the budget was balanced with no employee lay-offs and no work furloughs.
