(Calexico City Council ratifies contract for Fire Chief)…As expected, the Council agreed to finalize the contract with Peter Mercado. With the action Wednesday Mercado officially becomes the Cities new Fire Chief. Mercado had been serving as the interim Chief. He will be sworn in during ceremonies set for February 15. As fulltime Fire Chief, Mercado will earn a salary of $107,232 per year, with a $900 uniform allowance. Also Wednesday, the Council agreed to schedule a public workshop to discuss the Housing Element Update. The workshop will be held at the Cultural Arts Center, February 20, at 6:00 pm. The Council decided Wednesday to postpone the return of $945,000. The Heffernan Memorial Hospital District was to have returned the funds to the City in order to purchase new equipment for the Fire Department. The resolutions for the City and the District, however, did not coordinate. The Council asked that staff from both entities put together similar resolutions and return in two weeks.
