A house known locally as The Smurf House was destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon. The house in the 900 block of  " H " Street was completly destroyed by the wind swept fire that was first reported at about 2:00 Wednesday afternoon. When Brawley Fire Department personnel arrived they found flames leaping 30 to 40 feet in the air. A second alarm was sounded and assistence from Westmorland, Calipatria, Imperial County and El Centro fire departments responded. Nearby houses recieved some damage from the heat and smoke but firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading. Speculation is that the fire was caused when high winds blew a tree branch into power lines that then fell on the roof of the house and started the blaze.
