(A Brawley landmark goes up in flames)….Firefighters in Brawley were spread very thin last night and early this morning.

Just before mid-night the department was called to Mama Magees to combat a kitchen fire. Within ten minutes firefighters were sent to the historic Planters Hotel across from the downtown Plaza. The old Hotel was seriously burning and assistance was called in from as far away as Yuma, Arizona. Also assisting were engines from the Local Prison, Calipatria, Holtville, El Centro and possibly others. The blaze reportedly completely destroyed the historic facility, though damage estimates have not been provided. Officials say the good news was that no injuries have been reported, either from the inside of the facility or from those combating the blaze. At last report, some firefighters were still on the scene to ensure no flare-ups occurred. Brawley Police and members of the Community of Brawley Awareness Control team helped direct traffic away from the scene. The American Red Cross was on the scene to assist in anyway possible. The investigation into the cause of the fire is expected to get underway later today.
