| The United States Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit to block the proposed acquisition of National Beef Packing Company by JBS , S.A. , currently the third largest U.S. beef packer. National operates the Brawley beef packing plant. The anti-trust lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago. The Justice Department said that the proposed deal would combine two of the top four U.S. beef packers and that would result in lower prices to cattle suppliers and higher prices to consumers. JBS, S.A. is headquartered in Brazil and is currently in the process of acquiring Smithfield Beef Group Inc. The Justice Department said that they are not challenging that deal. In 2007 , JBS purchased Swift Foods Company. If not blocked , JBS's aquisition of Kansas City , Missouri based National would make it the largest U.S. beef packer , with an ability to slaughter more than 40,000 head of cattle per day. That's more than one-third of U.S. fed-cattle packing capacity. The Justice Department said that JBS's acquistion of National would substantially restructure the beef packing industry , eliminating a comperitively significant packer and placing more than80% of domestic fed cattle capacity in the hands of three firms: JBS , Tyson Foods Inc and Cargill Inc. National Beef has plants in Brawley, California as well as Liberal and Dodge City , Kansas. |
