(Tis the season to make a decision)….The Holiday season normally follows Halloween. Not this year. The Political season is next, then the holiday season. For most, the political season actually got underway this week for the November 6 elections. Most of the ballots around the County will be filled with choices in special districts. There are some, however, who will be deciding tax issues and choosing between City Council candidates. Calexico will have a very short ballot. The voters in the Border City will be asked to decide on Measure ‘Y’. The Measure calls for a 0.25 percent sales tax for 15 years only. According to the ballot, the tax will help pay for police, fire, library, recreation and specified public works projects, as well as help fund the project to cover the New River, revitalize downtown Calexico and promote economic development. The Measure would feature annual audits by an independent Citizen’s Oversight Committee. Brawley voters will also be asked to approve a tax measure. Measure ‘W’ asks for a sales tax increase of one half of one percent, to sunset in 10 years. The ballot says the tax would go to expand, develop, preserve and protect the safety and character of the City with a priority on funding essential public services such as police, fire, crime prevention, street and park maintenance, as well as City services. Brawley, El Centro and Calipatria will also be choosing new City Council members. Polls open at 7:00 am November 6. |
