U.S. Border Patrol Agents assigned to the Indio Station Border Patrol rescued three individuals stranded in the desert near Split Mountain. At about 9:30 Tuesday morning the agents responded to a report of individuals lost in the desert near Highway 78 and Split Mountain. The call was originally recieved by the California Highway Patrol. The CHP dispatcher was able to obtain valuable information as to the approximate location of the caller by referencing visible landmarks. This information was relayed to Border Patrol agents in the field. About an hour later the group of three was spotted by a Customs and Border Protection helicopter who than guided ground units to the location. The three were determined to be illegal aliens from Mexico. Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey Calhoon of the El Centro Sector told KXO News, " As the temperature rises in the Valley so does the inherent risk of heat related trauma. In this instance, we are thankful for the coordination of the California Highway Patrol and for our agents quick and decisive action in the field as more often than not, time is the deciding factor in the life or death of those who find themselves lost in the desert." Temperatures peaked at 112 degrees in El Centro yesterday.
