(Movement underway to prohibit Cargo trucks from Mexico)…Democratic Representative Peter DeFazio from Oregon is authoring the new Bill.

DeFazio says it is time to end the pilot NAFTA program. Under the program, Cargo Trucks from Mexico are allowed to haul their loads in the United States. And, for the first time ever, U.S. trucks are allowed to transport cargo in Mexico. Defazio is angry with the Bush administration, saying they ignored a law passed by Congress last year to end the pilot program. The Congressman says lax safety standards in Mexico make truck drivers from that nation a danger to the American public. If adopted, the bill would end the pilot program September 6. The bill would require an assessment from the Department of Transportation and an independent review panel created by the Department. Transportation has not said if they plan to continue the pilot program passed the September 6 cut-off date, but it is suspected they are working on it. Officials at the Department have said they do not agree with Defazio’s allegations, saying there is no proof the Mexican truckers and their vehicles are unsafe.
