Baja Military Commander sent to Mexico City

(A Controversial General is shipped out)…General Sergio Aponte Polito has been sent to Mexico City. The General was the Commander of military forces in Baja California. He has been a very vocal critic of drug traffickers and government officials. The last straw was apparently the result of a gunshot fired in a Mexicali restaurant the General was dining at. The General says the shot was an accidental discharge of a weapon, and the weapon was not his. Government officials say he is not being punished. They say he is being reassigned. His new position will be as President of the Supreme Military Tribunal. Supporters of the General say they are losing an important voice against traffickers and government corruption. During General Aponte’s tenure as Commander, his soldiers seized 539 metric tons of marijuana, 3,871 kilos of cocaine and 282 kilos of crystal methamphetamine. They destroyed 800 clandestine airstrips and seized over 1,200 vehicles and 1,500 weapons. They made 1,388 arrests.
