(Ascencio waives right to a speedy trial)….22 year old Frank Ascencio had entered a not guilty plea earlier this week.

He is charged with inflicting fatal stab wounds on his 3-year-old nephew, and critically wounding his 2-year-old niece. He was in Superior Court Thursday. After waiving his right to a speedy trial, Judge William Lehman set the Pre-trial for October 16. The Brawley man is said to have argued with his mother inside their “H” Street residence on September 18. Following the heated argument, he allegedly stabbed the two children. The three year old died from his wounds at Pioneers Memorial Hospital. The 2 year old was transported to San Diego and underwent surgery there. Her condition was last reported as critical, but has not been updated for a few days. Brawley Police Lt. Brett Houser says investigators are still trying to connect the heated argument with the stabbing. The Defendant was on Probation at the time of the incident. Police say he has a history of violent criminal activity. Ascencio’s teenaged sister was also stabbed in the incident, but her wounds were not life threatening. She was reportedly treated and released from PMH on the 18th.
