(Residents will be given some time to prepare for new Over-lay)….The California Public Utilities Commission approved the area code over-lay at their meeting in San Francisco Thursday.

In agreeing to the over-lay, the Commission went against its original decision to impose a new 442 area code for the San Diego County area. The over-pay means everybody in the 760 area code zone will be affected. The 442 prefix will be assigned to all new numbers in the zone. That will result in everybody dialing a ten-digit number for local calls. The original plan was to implement the new area code next month in November. The CPUC says the new over-lay will be phased in beginning in May 2009. Mandatory use will be in October of next year.
