(The third time was a charm for David Alvarez)….As expected, the Calexico Unified School District Board of Trustees held another vote on a proposed contract for Alvarez.

During the previous two votes, only three Board members attended the meeting. Tuesday night all five Board members were present. They voted 3-2 to approve a three-month contract with the former Superintendent. The contract will pay Alvarez $25,000 for the three months, retroactive to July 1, 2008. Sources say the School Board was virtually forced to approve the contract, since Alvarez never stopped working for the District, despite the previous two negative votes on the contract. Board President Eduardo Rivera, Richard Cordero and Sal Pacheco voted in favor of the contract Tuesday night. Trustees Mike Castillo and Enrique Alvarado voted against it. The contract calls for Alvarez help finish projects started during his tenure as Superintendent, and to help David Groesbeck transition into his position as interim Superintendent. Alvarez retired as Superintendent on June 30.
