(Air Quality not as bad as report indicates)…Newly appointed Director of the Air Pollution Control District, Brad Poiriez told the Board of Supervisors this week the air quality is getting better.

He said the report released by the American Lung Association last week did not tell the whole storey. The report gave Imperial County Air Quality an “F”. Poiriez said the report did not indicate the days of non-attainment for Ozone levels dropped significantly, and the non-attainment days for PM-10 went from 10 to 2 in the last year. The new Director said his department has reduced agriculture field burning my 60 percent. District four Supervisor Joe Maruca reminded the Board that the County cannot ban ag burning. He said State law only allows them to regulate it. Poiriez said the local air pollution is created by not only field burning but from vehicle emissions and mother nature. He said strong winds could create a non-attainment situation for particulate matter, and there is nothing anybody can do about it.
