(Poiriez named new Air Pollution Control Officer)…The County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to separate the Air Pollution Control District From the Agriculture Commissioners Department.

The action means Ag Commissioner Steve Birdsall has one less responsibility, and he was very grateful. Birdsall has worked as Ag Commissioner and Air Pollution Control Officer for the past 20 years. In recent years, he was also named County Airport Director. Brad Poiriez was named to head the new Department. He chose to stay with Imperial County, turning down the same position offered by San Diego County. San Diego had conducted a statewide search for a new A P C O and Poiriez was rated the top candidate for the position. In requesting the action, County Executive Officer Roberta Burns said it was time the Air Pollution Control Department had a separate identity. The local Farm Bureau and Vegetable Growers Association supported the separation. Nicole Rothfleisch of the Farm Bureau jokingly said the move would give Birdsall more time for Agriculture. In creating the new Department, the Board developed a new position for Poiriez, revised job descriptions, reclassified a couple positions and made changes to others. Burns said the new Department would be funded through the fiscal year from the Ag Department. The funding would be separated in the new budget.
