(Deadly amoeba kills teen in Mexicali)…The amoeba is virtually non-existent in the United States.

 In Mexico it is rare, but one or two victims of the deadly amoeba turns up every summer. The amoeba is called “Amoeba de Vida Libre” in Mexico. It develops in standing water, such as ponds, non-circulating swimming pools and even canals. The latest victim of the Amoeba was a 15 year old who had gone swimming in a canal. Two years ago a ten-year-old boy died from the amoeba. Officials in Mexicali say both boys were infected by the amoeba after swimming in a canal. The health department is Mexicali is warning residents not to go into any standing water. To stay out of canals, ponds and swimming pools not certified by the health department.
