Travelers planning trips across the border into Mexico are being reminded to make sure they have their proper entry documents and to anticipate heavy traffic during these seasonal celebrations.
Provided are a few simple steps travelers can employ to assist with crossing the border: - Plan your trip and allow extra time for crossing the border. Consult the CBP website (www.cbp.gov) to monitor border wait times and review the “Know Before You Go” tip sheet. Pre-recorded telephone messages updated hourly with current port wait time and lane information are available by calling (760) 768-2383.
- Be prepared to show proof of citizenship and identity to enter the United States. This can include a passport, passport card, trusted traveler program card (SENTRI and NEXUS), an enhanced driver’s license from participating states, or a birth certificate with a conventional driver’s license or other government issued photo identification. Travelers 18 year of age and under can present just a birth certificate.
- Travelers are required to declare everything acquired in Mexico including all agriculture products such as fruits, vegetables and handcraft wreaths or any other holiday decorations that may have hay or straw as an ingredient. These are not allowed into the U.S. due to possible insects and diseases that could harm the nation’s agricultural industry.
- U.S. travelers are urged to apply now for their passport card, SENTRI port pass or enhanced driver’s license from participating states, all of which incorporate a new vicinity RFID chip. Special RFID antennas will be installed in the near future at Calexico area ports of entry that will detect the improved documents before vehicles arrive at the port inspection booths, thus speeding the flow of traffic and reducing border wait times. More information on the application process is available at www.cbp.gov and www.state.gov .
