(ICE El Centro Detention Facility probably closing June 30th)….That announcement came at the County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday.
District 3 Supervisor Mike Kelley said he, Supervisor Ray Castillo and County Staff met with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials in San Diego on Monday. He said they were told employee contracts were up on June 30th, and with the high operations costs of the El Centro Facility, and current federal budget cuts, they could not see how they could keep the facility open. They did not specifically say the facility would be closing, but all indications were that ICE was in negotiations with Management Training Corporation to house detainees at their newly constructed facility east of Calexico. Mike Murphy, vice president of MTC said no agreement had been signed at this time. Murphy assured the county that contracted employees laid off from the ICE facility could be given a priority if they apply for jobs at the MTC facility. Murphy said the east Calexico facility is scheduled to begin limited operations on June 7th.
