The California Highway Patrol has released more details on a Wednesday afternoon traffic accident.
The accident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Interstate 8 west of Highway 98 near Holtville. A pick up truck driving westbound on I-8 made an unsafe turning movement and went out of control , crossed the center divider and went directly into the path of a tractor trailer rig driving eastbound. The vehicles collided head-on and the pick up driver , a 34-year old man from Tempe , Arizona , was ejected and sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the big rig and his passenger received minor injuries and were taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center for treatment. The big rig caught fire as a result of the aaccident and was totally destroyed. Both lanes of eastbound Interstate 8 were closed for at least an hour after the crash. One lane was closed for over 3 hours. The accident remains under investigation.
