(Flags flown at half Mast this week)…It was to honor the memory of 46-year-old Sergeant Gilbert Cortez.

 The Corrections Officer was killed in a traffic collision Monday. Cortez and his trained canine were in the lead vehicle of a convoy of five k-9 officers on Highway 79 heading to La Cima Conservation Camp on Sunrise Highway near Julien. The collision occurred at around 7:20 am near San Felipe Toad. The 23-year veteran corrections officer was working out of the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco. Cortez had also worked at the state prison in Calipatria. He is survived by his parents, wife and two children.
