(Battery Energy Storage project moving forward)…The Energy storage system is being constructed for the IID.
The system is part of the settlement the Imperial Irrigation District reached with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, as a result of the September 8th 2011 massive power outage. The bid to construct the Battery Energy Storage System was awarded to the Coachella Energy Storage Partners. CESP announced Thursday they had sub-contracted with General Electric to build the 30 megawatt storage system. IID General Manager Kevin Kelley said the bid award was upwards of $35 million. The System will be constructed in the Imperial County by the end of 2016, according to the settlement. The facility will aid grid flexibility and increase reliability on the IID network by providing solar ramping, frequency regulation, power balancing and black start capability for an adjacent gas turbine. The plant will be operated by ZGlobal, an engineering collaborator with CESP, for the first 18 months, after which control will transfer to the Imperial Irrigation District.
