Ten California Correctional Officers from Southern California were recognized for their heroism with the Medal 0f Valor , the departments highest honor.

Among those honored were Lt. Derrick Taylor , the former commander of the Ventura Conservation Camp. Taylor lost his life in the mass shooting at a Las Vegas concert last October. Taylor was recognized for his heroic efforts that saved the lives of five other concert goers. Taylor and other CDCR employees were attending the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival when the shooting started. Taylor's sons received the award on his behalf.

Also honored for their life-saving efforts at the concert were Correctional Officer Jason Peacock from the California Institution for Men in Chino and five employees from Chuckwalla Valley State Prison in Blythe including Lt. Greg Caravas, Sgt. Albert Powers and officers Keith and Catherine Ploesch. Three employees of Ironwood State Prison in Blythe were honored as well. Associate Warden Christopher Pierce , Lt. Kelli Madsen and Registered Nurse Stephanie Ortega.

The 33rd Medal of Valor ceremony was held last week in Elk Grove.
